How much responsibility should a Deputy actually have?
Here, quite a lot.
Tiny Tots Recruitment is looking for a Deputy Nursery Manager in Houghton Regis to become the Nursery Manager's genuine second-in-command within a large, established early years setting.
And there is something quite revealing in the nursery's own policies.
The setting specifically names the Deputy Manager as its nominated Health and Safety Officer. Parents are also directed to either the Nursery Manager or Deputy Manager when significant concerns need to be raised.
In other words, this isn't a role where "Deputy" just means opening the building when the Manager is on annual leave.
You'll have real responsibility.
Where you sit in the nursery
Above you, the Nursery Manager.
Alongside you, an established senior leadership structure.
Across the setting, individual rooms led by experienced practitioners, including Level 6-qualified staff. The nursery says all other practitioners are qualified to at least Level 2 or Level 3.
Your job is to help all of those moving parts operate as one nursery.
That could mean:
Supporting the Manager with nursery-wide decision making Taking responsibility when the Manager is unavailable Maintaining strong safeguarding practice across the setting Acting as a senior point of contact for staff and families Supporting health and safety procedures and risk management Monitoring standards within nursery rooms Supporting Room Leaders and practitioners Helping staff identify where children need additional support Overseeing aspects of planning, assessment and children's progress Supporting staff supervision and professional development Helping maintain effective deployment and organisation Working with parents when concerns or more complex conversations arise Supporting SEND and inclusive practice Liaising with outside professionals where appropriate Contributing to quality improvement and Ofsted readiness You'll need to know more than your own room
The employer's Deputy vacancy asks for a Level 3 or higher Early Years qualification and at least two years' experience within nursery management or a senior early years position.
That feels about right for the level of responsibility here.
This role could suit an existing Deputy, but it could also work for a very experienced Room Manager or senior leader who has already dealt with staffing, safeguarding, parents and nursery operations and is ready to broaden that experience.
The important thing is that you can switch perspectives.
Sometimes you need to look closely at one child's progress.
Sometimes you need to look at whether an entire room is functioning effectively.
And sometimes you need to look at the nursery as a whole and decide what needs attention first.
A nursery with its own support network
One of the stronger things about this setting is that it doesn't operate in isolation.
It has established links with:
The local Children's Centre Health visitors Speech and language therapists Central Bedfordshire's SENCO team Local family support services
That matters at Deputy level because you'll inevitably become involved when children need more than everyday nursery provision.
You aren't trying to build every professional relationship from scratch.
And then there's the Woodland Retreat
Because nursery management shouldn't mean you never see the interesting parts of the nursery.
The purpose-built setting has extensive gardens alongside its own Woodland Retreat, where children take part in experiences such as planting vegetables, nature hunts and carefully supervised campfire activities.
The wider curriculum is natural and curiosity-led, with an emphasis on wooden and natural resources, child-led exploration and meaningful outdoor play.
As Deputy, part of your role is making sure that philosophy is genuinely reflected across practice, rather than simply appearing in photographs on the website.
Something else I like about the evidence here
The nursery's previous Ofsted inspection didn't just mention the Manager.
It specifically highlighted the Manager and Deputy Manager working together to support staff in identifying where children needed additional help, while staff reported receiving regular supervision and support to develop their practice through further training.
That's a useful picture of what the Deputy role actually looks like in this setting.
You're there to strengthen other practitioners, not simply check up on them.
